Tension: using double knitting and 3.75mm needles, 
15 rows x 11sts to 2”(5cm) stocking stitch

Gauge: using light worsted (3) and size 5/3.75mm needles,
15 rows x 11sts to 2”(5cm) stockinette stitch

Abbreviations
k – knit, p – purl, st – stitch, st st – stocking stitch, 
g st – garter stitch (knit every row), alt – alternate,
beg – beginning, inc – increase, dec – decrease, rep – repeat,
tog – together, sl – slip,
m1 – make one (by knitting into the front of stitch
then into back of stitch),
yon - yarn over needle

Any sts in bold and underlined are knitted in contrast


Hat
Using contrast yarn cast on 64sts
Knit every row until work measures 1½”(3cm)
Starting with a purl row continue in st st for 5 rows
Change to main yarn
Continue in st st, starting with a knit row until work
measures 3 ¼”(8.25cm) from beginning

Break yarn and pull through stitches, pull tight and use
thread to sew seam. Sew the seams of hat making sure
to sew the contrast band on the right side so that
when it is turned up the seam does not show,
make a pompom and sew it on top of hat
